Captain T.A. Cunningham Radio Interview Quote
18-3-2002 |
|
"Fearless's last deployment has been it's most high profile
in recent years.
The first part was the major exercise in Oman. For which we
were the command ship for the amphibious element and that
was the biggest amphibious exercise that we have done in
many years.
There after, after the September the 11th, when we moved to
operation Oracle. We were then the initial launching base
for 40 commando Royal Marines, who eventually ended up in
Afghanistan." |

One of the aspects -
maybe the main aspect - of the Fearless book will
be her use as a tool of the changing UK defence
and foreign policies over the years - shown by the
fact that she was used in so many different ways
and in that regard I have described her as being
the single most import ship in the execution of
Britain's foreign policy since Victory and I think
that is true. Larger, more powerfully-armed
warships (the old dreadnaughts and later the Hood,
aircraft carriers et al) were BATTLE ships in
conflict and were seldom used as instruments of
policy in peace (or the prevention of war or in
limited war such as N Ireland) in the manner in
which Fearless was - this might of course be
arguable and I shall so do in the book.
I hope that helps too in your fight for her
survival,
With very best wishes - good luck and so on. Do
use my name as unashamedly as you wish in this
project and if there are ways that I can help -
like contacting people or by bringing pressure to
bear - then let me know.
Best regards, Ewen.
